Preparing to Hear God’s Word

Hymn 692
Spirit, Open My Heart
wild mountain thyme
Emma Lally, violin; Steven Seigart, piano; Suzanne Karpov Seigart, soprano

Refrain
Spirit, open my heart
to the joy and pain of living.
As you love may I love,
in receiving and in giving.
Spirit, open my heart.

1. God, replace my stony heart
with a heart that’s kind and tender.
All my coldness and fear
to your grace I now surrender.
Refrain

2. Write your love upon my heart
as my law, my goal, my story.
In each thought, word, and deed,
may be living bring you glory
Refrain

3. May I weep with those who weep;
share the joy of sister, brother.
In the welcome of Christ,
may we welcome one another.
Refrain

Prayer of Confession
John Gilbert

Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Our Response to God

Affirmation of Faith
Auggie Lisecki
Adapted from A Brief Statement of Faith (1991)

We trust in God the Holy Spirit,
everywhere the giver and renewer of life.
The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith,
sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor,
and binds us together with all believers
in the one body of Christ, the Church.
In a broken and fearful world
the Spirit gives us courage
to pray without ceasing,
to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,
to unmask idolatries in Church and culture,
to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,
and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks
and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth,
praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

Hymn 288/Prayer
Spirit of the Living God
living god

Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me.
Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me.
Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me.

Presentation of Our Tithes and Offerings

Anthem

“Start a Fire”
—Unspoken
Performed by the Middle and High School Youth
Text by Shirley Erena Murray, music by Swee Hong Lim

1. Peoples, clap your hands!
Shout to God with joy!
King of all the earth
is the Lord most high;
sing your praise to God,
sing with joyful voice!
With a mighty hand
God brings nations low,
and beneath our feet
casts down every foe;
our inheritance
comes from God the Lord!

2. God ascends the throne
with a joyful cry,
and with trumpet sound
has gone up on high;
sing your praise to God,
sing with joyful voice!
Rulers, peoples,
now join to serve the Lord;
for earth’s mighty ones
all belong to God,
who exalted reigns:
now with Psalms rejoice!
